Truth and Consequence Single Malt Whisky – Ben Nevis Edition

Our 5th Release

Our 5th Truth and Consequence Single Malt Whisky brings you an absolute delight from Ben Nevis Distillery in Scotland’s Western Highlands. Initially, the whisky was aged for just over 10 years in a 200L Refill Bourbon barrel. Then, on June 9, 2023, we transferred the liquid to a premium French Chateau HAUT-BERGERON Sauternes cask for a 3-month finish.

The Finishing Touch

Although the bourbon barrel whisky tasted sublime at 10 years old, the Sauternes cask added an exciting dimension. As a result, the back palate and finish were rounded off by the bourbon notes with chalky, sweet precision. Furthermore, the interaction between the Ben Nevis spirit and sweet wine cask created layers of complexity rarely found in standard releases.

Tasting Notes

Nose: Rich apricot jam with supporting notes of stewed apples and the classic, slight Nevis ‘funk’. Moreover, the aromas balance sweetness with subtle complexity.

Palate: A satisfying malty character forms the foundation, while complementary fresh orchard fruits develop across the tongue. Additionally, bush honey adds a distinctive natural sweetness that enhances the whisky’s depth without overwhelming the palate.

Finish: Medium length with bright, fresh qualities. The balanced between the bourbon cask maturation and Sauternes influence is simply divine, resulting in one delicious pour.

About Chateau HAUT-BERGERON

Over the years, Chateau HAUT-BERGERON has earned 118 medals, including 68 gold, making it Sauternes’ most awarded winery. Their vineyard spans about 2200 hectares across five communes, with many vines growing next to their famous neighbor, Chateau d’Yquem. Undoubtedly, the exceptional quality of these sweet wine casks contributes significantly to our whisky’s unique character.

Our Natural Approach

We proudly bottled our robust, raw Ben Nevis whisky at cask strength. In fact, we only use a simple 25-micron bag to catch wood or char pieces. With zero chill-filtration and no added color, all the beautiful compounds and esters remain in the whisky. This approach creates a waxy mouthfeel and natural drinking experience without processed interruptions. Above all, we craft our whisky for true savants – it’s “Whisky with Integrity,” straight from the cask.

Limited Availability

With only one cask selected for this exclusive release, availability is extremely limited. Each bottle comes individually numbered, hence reflecting its place in our rare collection. In conclusion, whisky enthusiasts and collectors should act quickly to secure their very own piece of Ben Nevis history.

Expert Opinion

Finally, whisky expert Serge Valentin from whiskyfun.com remarks on our release: “Putting Ben Nevis in Sauternes, to me, is the equivalent of a triple axel in figure skating”

About Ben Nevis Distillery

The Ben Nevis distillery was founded in 1825 by John MacDonald as an independent enterprise and is located in Fort William, Scotland at the base of Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in the British Isles, which rises to 1,345m above sea level. A coastal distillery in the Western Highlands, Ben Nevis draws its water from the Allt a’Mhuilinn (translated to – ‘The stream of the mill’), which originates from two pools on Ben Nevis, Coire Leis and Coire na’Ciste. The distillery is owned by Nikka Whisky Distilling of Tokyo, Japan, since 1989.

The production at Ben Nevis has really ramped up throughout the years with their annual capacity now reaching over two million litres of spirit. The distillery currently has two wash stills with a volume of 25,000 litres and two spirit stills with a capacity of 20,000 each. Around one-third of the distillery’s new-make spirit is exported to Japan, where it is a component of the popular Nikka Black blend.
