Amber Lane Distillery: The Crown Jewel of the Central Coast, NSW
Discover
There’s a particular kind of magic in a bottle of Australian single malt whisky, one that carries within it the soil, the seasons, the personalities, the process, and the sheer tenacity of the modern-day craft distilling movement. Nowhere is that magic more apparent than at Amber Lane Distillery, nestled in the lush Yarramalong Valley on the NSW Central Coast. If you haven’t heard of them yet, you’re about to understand why whisky lovers across Australia, and internationally, are talking.
A Story Forged in the Stars
Every great distillery has an origin story, but few are as serendipitous as Amber Lane’s. In 2017, friends and amateur astronomers Rod Berry and Phil Townsend were stargazing in Coonabarabran, NSW, when a chance visit to a small distillery sparked a dream. From that moment, the vision for Amber Lane began to take shape.
Rod, a self-confessed whisky nerd, brought deep industry knowledge, honed through years with the Scotch Malt Whisky Society, studies at the Australian Whisky Academy, and tastings of over 1,000 expressions. His travels across Australia, Scotland, and France’s Cognac region helped shape Amber Lane’s clear direction.
Phil is the operational engine. As head distiller, he drives daily production with a focus on precision and continuous improvement. His passion is infectious, and when he’s not producing whisky, he works as a respected acupuncturist, where patience and attention to detail are just as essential.
Yarramalong Valley, NSW Central Coast: A Whisky Region on the Rise
Located in Wyong on the NSW Central Coast, Amber Lane sits within one of Australia’s most beautiful and underrated regional landscapes. The pristine Yarramalong Valley provides a naturally temperate, clean-air environment, ideal conditions for the patient process of whisky maturation.
For whisky enthusiasts planning a visit, Amber Lane hosts monthly open days, offering tastings, cask samples, and blending classes. It’s one of the finest distillery experiences on offer in New South Wales.
Meet The Mary Rose: The 3,600-Litre Copper Heart of Amber Lane
At the centre of the Amber Lane operation stands “The Mary Rose” a magnificent 3,600-litre copper pot still with a steam jacket and copper barrel insulation, custom-made by Burns Welding. The still is purpose-designed to maximise copper contact during distillation, a critical factor in stripping unwanted sulphur compounds and building the complex, layered flavour chains that define Amber Lane whisky.
The result is a spirit with emphasis on the natural character of the barley. Creamy, sweet, and beautifully structured, providing the ideal foundation for extended cask maturation.
Production Philosophy: European Principles, Australian Soul
What distinguishes Amber Lane from its peers is the deliberate application of European distilling principles, particularly those drawn from the Cognac region of France, within an Australian whisky context. This is a genuinely unique positioning, and it shows up powerfully in the finished product.
Their cask program is equally important. While many Australian distilleries work with smaller barrels for faster maturation, Amber Lane opts for large-format 200-250+ litre casks, sourced from premium producers of Spanish Pedro Ximénez, Oloroso Sherry, French Cognac, and Kentucky Bourbon. Larger casks mean slower, gentler maturation and a more nuanced spirit. Combined with longer ageing cycles and a consistent refusal to rush the whisky to market, this approach is responsible for the exceptional depth Amber Lane achieves.
Award-Winning: A Medal for Every Single Release
The results of this approach speak for themselves. Amber Lane holds the extraordinary distinction of having won a medal at national or international whisky competitions for every single whisky they have ever released. Highlights include two gold medals and the small batch category win at the prestigious World Whiskies Awards in London in March 2023, a Champion Small Batch award at the 2024 Royal Australian Spirits Awards, and an entry in the 2025/2026 edition of Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible, one of only a handful of Australian distilleries to earn that distinction.
Our Amber Lane Releases: A Tale of Two Whiskies, with a French Twist!
We’ve collaborated directly with Rod and Phil to bring you two exclusive Amber Lane single cask bottlings. Both distilled on the same day in May 2020, and both telling a fascinating and contrasting story about how cask selection shapes a whisky’s destiny.
Release 1: Amber Lane Distillery 2020 Vintage First-Fill Bourbon 700ml 61% alc
This is a landmark bottling, the first Amber Lane whisky ever fully matured in a single bourbon barrel. The whisky was distilled on 30 May 2020 and laid to rest for 4 years and 3 months in a quality first fill, Heaven Hill bourbon barrel, bottled at a natural cask strength of 61% ABV.
Our Tasting Thoughts.
The aroma doesn’t merely hint at sweetness. Rather, it hums with warmth. Notes of honey on toast mingle with burnt butter complexity. Additionally, a hint of candy cane provides contrast to these warm foundations.
The spirit-to-wood synergy is absolutely bang on with biscuity characters forming the base. This is complemented by bright orange peel adding a citrus zing. Delicate white cocoa rounds out the experience, bringing subtle creaminess and depth.

Release 2: Amber Lane Distillery 2020 Vintage Bourbon/Pineau des Charentes Finish 700ml 61.5% alc.
This is where the story gets truly captivating. When we bottled our first Amber Lane release, we made a deliberate decision to hold back the other half of that same bourbon barrel, transferring it into a Pineau des Charentes French oak cask for a 20-month extended finish. The result, bottled on 30 November 2025 at 61.5% ABV after a total of 5 years and 6 months, is simply stunning – and utterly different from its sibling.
Our Tasting Thoughts.
The whisky effortlessly balances classic bourbon matured sweetness and oak influence with the distinctive, fruit-forward, dessert wine character from the Pineau des Charentes finish.
Expect a dram that’s rich, elegant, and layered, with hints of fennel, old books, fresh melon, honey and dark chocolate weaving into fruitier, fortified wine inspired notes.
So, What Is Pineau Des Charentes
Pineau des Charentes is one of France’s hidden gems! A lush, fortified wine from the Charentes region, in the very heartland of Cognac. It’s made by blending fresh grape must with young Cognac eau-de-vie, a process that halts fermentation and locks in natural sweetness, before gently ageing the liquid in French oak.

Our two 2020 vintage expressions represent something genuinely rare: an exclusive, direct-to-consumer collaboration with one of Australia’s most decorated distilleries, offering bottles that tell a compelling story of terroir, innovation, and the transformative power of the wood. With just 107 bottles of Release 1 and 93 bottles of Release 2 ever produced, these are not whiskies to deliberate over.
What the Future Holds for Amber Lane Distillery
The trajectory of Amber Lane Distillery is definitively upward. With their 2025/2026 Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible listing cementing international recognition, a growing suite of award-winning expressions, and a distillery open day program now booked well into 2026, Rod and Phil are firmly in the sights of whisky lovers all over Australia.
Their commitment to longer maturation cycles means the whisky is getting better with every passing year. As their oldest casks and barrels continue to develop, and as their experimental cask finishing program (typified so brilliantly by our Pineau des Charentes expression above) continues to push creative boundaries, the best from Amber Lane may genuinely be yet to come.
Conclusion
Amber Lane Distillery is not a future proposition, it is a present day, world-class producer, operating from one of Australia’s most beautiful regional landscapes, with a philosophy built entirely around patience, precision, and an unwavering pursuit of quality.
From the custom-built Mary Rose copper still to the carefully selected Spanish sherry and Cognac casks, every decision made at Amber Lane is made with flavour, complexity, and the drinker’s experience at its heart. Long may she reign!
