The Three Firsts with Furneaux!
Release No. 10 from Truth and Consequence breaks new ground as the first independent bottling from Furneaux Distillery. It comes from Flinders Island, off Tasmania’s rugged north coast. Moreover, it marks the distillery’s first Topaque cask-matured single malt. It also stands as their first natural cask strength release, redefining what this remote outpost can deliver. We had a great time collaborating with talented distiller Tom Ambroz and the Furneaux team. Together, we shaped and nurtured this beautiful whisky into life.
Matured in a single, first-fill American oak Topaque quarter cask, this limited release pushes beyond expectations. A rare diamond shaped by the salty, wind-swept rough of Flinders Island. This is Furneaux, but not as you know it…….
Bottled at a commanding 60.6% ABV, the liquid arrives unapologetically bold, bursting with dark sweetness, intensity, and raw character. This isn’t just a dram, it’s equal parts silk and indulgence, built to leave a lasting impression, long after the final pour.
The Tasting Experience
The nose opens with a gentle dustiness, unfolding into bright orchard fruits layered with brown sugar and rich malted toffee. On the palate, it comes alive with a burst of darker fruits, balanced by creamy vanilla fudge and the warming nuttiness of toasted pecans. Then, the finish lingers long and confident, building into a lively interplay of white pepper spice, nostalgic fruit tingles, and a final flourish of drying spiced honey that slowly fades into a memorable farewell.
Bottled For The Seasoned Whisky Enthusiast
Like all Truth and Consequence releases in Australia, we bottled this Furneaux gem straight from the cask at 60.6% ABV. Zero added colour. Zero dilution. Zero compromise. Just pure, untamed whisky. Honest, raw, and created for Australian whisky savants.
What Is Topaque Cask Matured Single Malt Whisky?
Topaque is an Australian style of a Hungarian fortified wine called Tokaji. It uses Muscadelle grapes and matures for years, often decades, in a solera system of oak casks. As it ages, the wine develops a deep amber colour. It also builds rich flavours of caramel, toffee, coffee, dried fruits, and nuts with a luscious sweetness balanced by impressive depth and intensity.
Formerly known as Tokay (renamed under 2010 Australian regulations), Topaque is prized for its smooth, warming character and long finish. Ideal as an after-dinner dram or paired with desserts and cheese.
